MLM Training Keys – They AREN’T What You Think!
Posted by iGolftip in Golf Swing Tips Articles, tags: ARENT, Think, TrainingWhen I joined an MLM company years back, my mentor (who lived across the country) kept talking about getting me to the company training. I finally got to go, but was far from actual training. It was a very effective pep talk and got the couple of hundred people that were attending to be VERY pumped up. I felt sorry for the people that were at the hotel where our meeting was. They must have been approached by dozens of different people. It was an entertaining and motivating day, but not what I would call training.
True training involves building the Knowledge, Skill and Attitudes necessary in performing a task(s).
Just about ALL MLM and Internet Marketing programs do NOT offer effective training. Yes, they provide much of the knowledge needed, and some even help mold the mindsets and attitudes necessary to succeed in these industries. Yet, few if any, provide actual TRAINING to create the skills needed to succeed.
It’s worth repeating: Telling people what to do is not training.
Training is NOT:
- Going to a group meeting and just listening to speakers
- Reading an ebook
- Watching a video
Research shows that the most effective training consists of 1/3 presentation of the material to be learned, 1/3 application of the knowledge/skills being learned, and 1/3 feedback to the learner. Proper training is 2/3 practice and feedback! How many “trainings” have you attended and or bought that have provided this?
Why is it so important for the learner to practice in the presence of the mentor? The answer might surprise you: To develop muscle memory for the skills you are developing.
When we learn a new skill, one of the most important things about performing the actions of that skill, is noticing what it feels like to while doing so. Our bodies must synchronize with our minds while performing the actions that develop the skill we’re learning. A great example of this is learning to golf.
When someone takes a golf lesson, they are not just told what to do, they actually capture your swing and show you what you look like now, as well as what you should be doing. These systems essentially show the gap between the golfer’s current skill position and where they need to be. Next, the golf instructor’s job is to recommend a change to cross that gap. As you make the change, you need to notice what it FEELS like. You then practice the new action over and over again, so it feels NATURAL to perform that action. Remember though: Practice does NOT make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Correct practice building the muscle memory of the action. It is no different in business, specifically MLM. You must practice all skills, but you must practice correctly. The purpose of practice is to get your body and mind synchronized.
I learned this the hard way in my former profession. Years ago, before I officially became a corporate trainer, I developed a training class for the operations team for which I worked. I spent hours and hours developing the class, and knew the material better than anyone. Yet, when I taught the class for the first time, I stumbled and bumbled and it sounded like I had NO IDEA what I was talking about. The problem was I didn’t practice delivering the class. As a result, my body (specifically my mouth) was just learning how to perform this task as I was teaching it. In other words, my mind and mouth weren’t synchronized. Consequently, from that time on, ANYTIME I get ready to deliver something for the first time, I practice OUT LOUD at least once, so my body knows what to do.
This is no different for you. You must practice the actions that make up the skill(s) you are learning. Remember though – practice makes permanent. It’s Perfect practice that makes perfect. Make sure when you are practicing, that you are doing it the RIGHT WAY.
Steps to GREAT Performance:
1) Learn the RIGHT WAY to do something
2) Practice doing it the RIGHT WAY. (You need feedback to determine if you are doing it the RIGHT WAY.)
